EnviroTip

Make your own compost! Combine your kitchen scraps, coffee grounds, leaves and yard waste in a compost bin. Buy a paper shredder and add shredded paper to the compost, which essential microbes love to eat. If your community does not allow open compost bins, buy an enclosed trommel bin. Distribute this “black gold” in your garden in the spring and fall. A 1995 federal study states that 96.4 billion pounds of edible food was landfilled by consumers, grocery stores, and restaurants. That translates to 122 lbs. per month for a family of four. A shocking 27% of all food is wasted and should be composted instead of landfilled. Another federal study estimates that 23% of the total waste stream in the United States is comprised of biodegradable material, such as food scraps and yard waste. This needlessly landfilled waste produces methane, a greenhouse gas that deprives the atmosphere of oxygen. We’re harming only ourselves by landfilling: compost or recycle instead!

If you cannot compost at your home, bring your compost to our physical plant in Dillsburg for a nominal fee
